Winter is approaching and with it the temperatures drop. As usual in many outdoor sports, when the cold December breezes approach, suddenly, the courses seem to become exclusive for those true lovers of the sport and the Empordà Golf Club is no exception.
And is that the world of golf due to its vulnerable situation outdoors fortunately or unfortunately is not spared from the effects of the seasons.
Most probably, coat, thermals and gloves will be your best allies when you go out to play your holes, but not all clothes are valid. If you do not know how you should equip yourself, here are 5 vital tips to make your day at the Empordà Golf Club unforgettable.
1- Mittens - Shoes - Hat
The extremities and the head of the human body are the first link that loses temperature when the cold lurks, which is why we must make an extra effort to ensure excellent results on the course. Therefore, it will be essential to use technical winter gloves on both hands and if the cold is extreme, we will use mittens between strokes to keep our hands at one hundred percent at the time of hitting.
Waterproof golf shoes with their corresponding technical socks and a good hat or cap with earmuffs to keep your body heat and focus all your attention on the game are also a must.
2- Hot drinks
It may seem obvious, but we can assure you that it is a very rare resource in the golf courses despite being wonderful. Who doesn't feel like a good sip of coffee, tea or hot chocolate when the temperatures get hotter? In these occasions, a burning thermos cannot be missing in your bag.
3- One more stick
Punching in winter has its own characteristics due to physics and temperature. That is, the lower the temperatures, the denser the air and the colder the ball will be, which results in loss of spin and speed, which translates into loss of distance. So if possible you should play with one more club.
4- The sun
It is very common to relate low temperatures with the absence of sun, however, both concepts are not strictly related, so we can be playing at zero degrees of temperature and be burning our skin even though the sky is cloudy.
Using sunscreen before making your holes, bringing sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection and smearing your lips with a good lip balm can save you several burns.
5- Your body is wise
Despite being eager to play, having done everything possible to prevent the cold and being fully equipped, sometimes the body says "No more". That is why we must be aware of the signals that the body sends us.
Some of the most extreme indicators are:
- Slurred speech
- Slow breathing
- Lack of coordination
- Weak pulse
- Drowsiness
- Numbness of hands and feet
If we have any of the above symptoms, we should pause the game and warm up immediately.
Prevention is worth two: If we see that the temperatures are very extreme, a very smart move to avoid pushing our body to the limit is to go halfway through the course. This will allow us to enjoy our sport without putting ourselves at risk.
